Gary came to Christ through the Navigator ministry at Ball State University. About a year later he began to lead dorm Bible studies and served as a student minister at the Ball State Campus House his last year of college.
Following graduation, he married his wife, Sharon, and began teaching at a middle school north of Indianapolis. During his seven years of teaching, he began and led a Fellowship of Christian Athletes ministry at the middle school and high school. Sharon and Gary also had their first child, Betsy, during this time.
The next seven years were spent at a Christian school on the northeast side of Indianapolis. Gary served as the elementary principal and eventually as the middle school principal. During this time, the Walker’s were blessed with two more children, Marie and Grant.
Gary felt called to pastoral ministry in 1989 and in the summer of 1990 the whole family moved to the north side of Chicago so Gary could attend Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. In the fall of 1991, the family moved to Vacaville, California to begin their ministry at Valley Evangelical Free Church where Gary became the Pastor of Family Ministries. It was during this time that God put a special call on Gary’s life to grow into Christlike manhood and to help other men do the same. Toward the end of his time in Vacaville, Gary began to serve as the Director of Men’s Ministry in the Western District and to gather men from other churches in the area for fellowship and exhortation.
When the Walker’s moved back home to Indianapolis, Gary was asked to give some leadership and direction to the GLD’s ministry to men. During the past three years some small steps have been taken toward that aim and Gary continues to trust the Lord for His perfect will to be accomplished throughout the district and in each region. As God’s vision unfolds within the district, Gary is leading the Men’s Ministry at his own church and gathering pastors and men from other churches in the area for mutual encouragement and prayer. |
