| Mr. Mathew Mathai |
| Accountant |
Mathew, a native of Kerala, India; relocated from his homeland to the Chicago area in 1993. He chose to leave his home country to provide a better life for his wife and two children.
Mathew began his accounting career 25 years ago while working as a Sales Accountant for Union Carbide Corporation’s Indian Subsidiary at Bhopal. He continued to work with Carbide for nine years until the closure of its Chemical Plant in 1984, after a major toxic gas leak, which took about eight thousand lives and injured more than a hundred thousand. Mathew and wife Ammu survived the world’s worst industrial disaster! Mathew’s daughter Sherin was born within a month of this tragedy. She is now twenty and completed her first year college at Purdue University. Mathew worked for State Government Corporation until he left India.
Mathew moved with his family to South Bend, Indiana, in 1996 to pursue Ammu’s nursing career. Mathew worked with Uniroyal’s Mishawaka Plant as Accounts Payable Specialist for three years. After being laid off from job Mathew realized the importance for computer training to live in a technologically driven society. It took some time, but then he attended school full time and completed his Associate Degree in Computer Science with Networking Specialty. Since then Mathew took teaching/consultation jobs in computer applications and accounting software.
Mathew is extremely glad for the opportunity to work with the Great Lakes District EFCA and to be a part of the great mission, in his own humble way. |
